The first step towards renewable energy has been taken. The UK has started to make their first direct link to another European country ( The Netherlands ) in about 25 years. They make use of a high voltage cable with a capacity of 1000MW this is almost the same as a nuclear power station. The achievement is astonishing due the fact that several other HVDC cables lose their power after 8o km. According to Nick Wisner, executive director of the National Grid, they hope to achieve a stabilization of energy prices and maintaining the UK energy security.
We all hear that we have to take care of the nature or else the human race will die due the fact that we are destroying Mother Earth. This renewable energy, which is actually a power cable through the North Sea and into another country, seems like a good way to start. However, this also worries me. The high voltage capacity is equivalent to a nuclear power station, would it not mean that it is not energy saving at all? According to the executive directors it is all save and renewable and when it is renewable it seems superb. There are different ways to make use of renewable energy and I do think that we do not need a high voltage cable to achieve that.
